I have recently started a new casual job, in Western Sydney. I would never go to this suburb besides going to work, purely for the fact I do not like the suburb and do not under any circumstance feel safe walking the streets there.
Normally I would like to take my lunch, maybe something stupid like 2 minute noodles.. I would like to buy, but there is nothing around me but fast food and, like I said, I do not like this suburb so I def wouldnt trust anything these people cook, even if it is a world wide food chain store. Yesterday, however was a different situation. I did not have time to take lunch, and there are no supermarkets around. There is a KFC a few buildings up, but my aunty had informed me that they served Halal meat. This repulsed me. I do not have anything against that meat being eaten by those people, just I as a Australian Catholic, would like no such part of and shouldnt have to, considering what country I am living it. After seeing the KFC sign as soon as I walked out of my building, I decided I did feel like it, and I knew there was another one, about 20 minutes drive away and I had been there before so I was pretty sure it was no Halal.
I hop into my car and I drive to the next KFC and I go through the drive thru, and sure enough, there wasnt a sign pinned up, advertising Halal.. so I ordered my meal. I did however notice a sign that stated something along the lines of "Sorry customers, we do not serve bacon at this store." Now that grabbed my attention. I drove around to the next window where the girl was waiting to take my money. I took one look at her and had no option but to ask the very obvious "Is this a Halal KFC?" The girl looked at me and said "Yes, is that a problem?" (with her very strong accent). I replied "yes it is. It is illegal to sell that, without a warning sign for customers" She pointed behind her somewhere far off in the store "We do have a sign on the wall inside" I gave her my death stare and said "yes.. inside... I am outside... in the drive thru.. with NO SIGN INFORMING ME THAT I AM ABOUT TO PAY MY MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT I DO NOT BELIEVE IN EATING.. forget my meal, I DON'T WANT IT!!"
With that, I sped off!! ANNOYED!! If I had not have asked, I would have not been told. I really do not care for the comments like "you wouldnt have noticed the difference" I do not care if I would not have noticed the difference. The point is, it is their belief to eat this meat, and my belief and right NOT TO!!
If they do not eat bacon, DO NOT ORDER BACON. It is beyond ridiculous that Bacon was taken right off the menu. I myself, would not have ordered bacon, but that doesnt mean I feel it should be banned from the store. I understand that this large community, which is growing very fast, needs to eat their blessed meat.. But what I don't understand, is why we are living in Australia, and Australians can't drive to the local KFC and order normal damn chicken!! Can someone explain this to me? Now I returned home and did some research online to find out exactly what Halal was and meant..When I finally found an english response, this is what I found in short "The animals used for Halal meat have their throats slit open, where as other meat, the animals have an electric shot bolt to the head, killing them instantly. It can take up to two minutes for the animal to die from the cut to the throat, this is where the priest sacrifices the animal or something along those lines." I was told that Halal meat is cleaned a lot better then other meat.. But still that is no excuse for this torture. Now I could be wrong.. I may have found incorrect information. But the point of the matter is..I choose NOT to eat Halal.. and I should be able to have that choice. Is it not my tax paying right?
I am going to state the obvious that some of you might already have presummed, I do live in the Shire, but living here only minutes from Cronulla, does not create my opinions. I have only recently moved here due to my partner. I was raised in the West side of Sydney and I am so grateful for my move. Because I know I can drive to my local shire KFC and have the chicken that should be served, served. That is until this certain community, decides to migrate over the bridge. But I have a feeling, us shire people.. will be ready!!
